High School Seniors

Beyond the Studio: Finding the Perfect Location for Your Senior Pictures
Senior year is a massive milestone. It’s a blur of final games, late-night study sessions, and the exciting (and slightly terrifying) anticipation of what comes next. When it comes to your senior pictures, you want photos that feel entirely you—not a stiff, cookie-cutter portrait in front of a fake studio backdrop.
The secret to senior pictures that actually feel authentic? The location.
As a photographer, I have had the privilege of shooting seniors all over the region, and I’m a firm believer that your backdrop should match your personality. Whether you are an adventurous soul, a city lover, or a quiet romantic, here are some of the best locations I’ve photographed high school seniors to help inspire your own session.
1. The Urban Explorer: Downtown Detroit & City Grids
If your style is bold, trendy, and a little bit edgy, an urban backdrop is unmatched. Downtown Detroit is one of my absolute favorite playgrounds for senior sessions.
- The Vibe: High-energy, modern, and editorial.
- What to Look For: Think gritty brick alleys, vibrant murals in the Eastern Market, sleek rooftop views overlooking the skyline, and architectural elements like the Detroit Institute of Arts.
- Best Suited For: Seniors who love fashion, bold colors, and a clean, architectural aesthetic.
2. The Free Spirit: Sun-Drenched Fields & Wooded Trails
For the seniors who feel most at home in nature, stepping away from the pavement and onto the trail changes everything.
- The Vibe: Whimsical, relaxed, and timeless.
- What to Look For: Tall, golden-hour prairie grass, hidden forest paths with filtered sunlight, and rustic wooden fences.
- Best Suited For: Free spirits, country hearts, and anyone who wants their session to feel effortless and breezy. Bonus: Nature backdrops mean your outfits really get to do the talking!
3. The Lakeside Romantic: Waterways & Sandy Shores
There is something incredibly peaceful about a waterfront session. Whether it's a vast lakefront or a quiet, rushing riverbank, water adds a gorgeous, reflective element to your portraits.
- The Vibe: Dreamy, serene, and classic.
- What to Look For: Sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, public docks, or even a grassy riverbank.
- Best Suited For: Swimmers, boaters, or anyone who spent their childhood summers by the water and wants to capture that nostalgia.
4. The Best of Both Worlds: Small-Town Charm
If you can’t decide between nature and architecture, a historic small-town downtown is the ultimate compromise.
- The Vibe: Cozy, classic, and full of character.
- What to Look For: Main streets lined with historic brick storefronts, vintage theater marquees, ivy-covered walls, and nearby community parks.
- Best Suited For: Seniors who want a diverse gallery with lots of variety in a short walking distance.
How to Choose Your Perfect Spot
Still torn on where to go? Ask yourself these three questions before you lock in a location:
- What do you wear on a normal weekend? If you live in sneakers and graphic tees, an elegant estate might feel disconnected. Match the location's energy to your personal style.
- What are your hobbies? If you are an artist, maybe an art museum district is calling your name. If you hike every Sunday, let's head to the woods.
- What's the wardrobe plan? If you have a bright, flowy dress, it will pop beautifully against green woods or a blue lake. If you’re wearing sharp tailoring or streetwear, the city grid is your best friend.
Pro-Tip: Don't stress about finding the exact coordinates. That's my job! When we book your session, we'll talk about the vibe you want, and I'll handle the scouting to find the perfect, light-filled hidden gem that matches your vision.
